Abstract

|
Extracranial internal carotid artery stenosis is an important risk factor of ipsilateral ischemic stroke. Carotid endarterectomy remains the gold standard of invasive treatment of internal carotid artery stenosis. However based on recent evidence, carotid angioplasty and carotid stenting is a valid alternative to carotid endarterectomy in an increasing percentage of patients in need of invasive treatment. The purpose of this article to update the current status of endovascular therapies in patients with extracranial carotid artery stenosis with a focus on the most recent developments regarding the role of carotid stenting.
